Famous worldwide, Lisbon—Portugals’ charming capital— is known for its endless sunny days, and a perfect blend of culture, gastronomy, history, and nightlife. The best trip for everybody! Here’s your ultimate guide to exploring Lisbon, from its iconic landmarks to its vibrant nightlife.
Walking Through History: Lisbon’s Iconic Monuments
Lisbon’s history dates back hundreds of years, and according to my Uber driver, it is considered to be the European country with the oldest fixed borders. Scattered throughout the city, Lisbon’s monuments tell captivating stories about its past.
Start by exploring Belém, where the Belém tower is waiting for you, a UNESCO World Heritage site that was the city’s harbor. Close to it, is the Jerónimos Monastery, a must-see architectural masterpiece that paints Portugals’ Age of Discovery.
You absolutely can’t miss the Castelo de São Jorge, up at the top of a hill which gives panoramic views of Lisbons’ known red roofs. It is a winding hike along Lisbons’ steep and narrow streets, but definitely a place to remember.
To then tribute Portuguese explorers, who toured numerous nations, it’s necessary to visit the Pedrão dos Descobrimentos, AKA the Monument to the Discoveries. The Alfama district, also is home to lots of Lisbons’ history where you can find the Sé de Lisboa, its Cathedral, and the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte

Eat like a local
I can’t shut up about the delicious food that Lisbon offers, a mix of its traditional cuisine and restaurants from all over the world. No matter your taste, there is something to satisfy every palate.
I’d recommend beginning with Cervejaria Ramiro, where fresh seafood is served. Be sure to try their percebes (gooseneck barnacles), they’re simply delicious! For more authentic Portuguese flavors, visit Taberna da Rua das Flores where lots of small plates are served blending local ingredients.
If you prefer a more cozy dinner, Solar dos Presuntos, a family-run restaurant, is a perfect choice where Portuguese serve classics such as bacalhau à brás and polvo à lagareiro. And, you can’t miss visiting Pastéis de Belém!
A Little Gem I found: While Lisbon is full of fancy bars and cafés, don’t forget about O Trevo, a local favorite for its authentic feel, that is often hard to find. It’s known for its bifanas and ice-cold beer, at a very low price, affordable for all.

From Flea Markets to Designer Finds
What I loved most about Lisbon’s shopping scene was its many traditional craft shops, showcasing the city’s love for art and fashion. All around there are many pop-up stores with a lot of different things to offer for any kind of shopper.
For any non-artsy people, there’s of course the Avenida da Liberdade, where all designer stores are lined up in a boulevard: Louis Vuitton, Prada, and many more. For shoppers looking for higher-end items, a great place to go is the X factory, home to a former industrial complex, offering independent boutiques, art galleries, and bookstores.
A must-go is to the bustling Feira da Ladra, a flea market held in Alfama every Tuesday and Saturday, where you can hunt for vintage treasures and antiques for very good prices!

Lisbon at Night
As charming as daytime in Lisbon is, its nightlife is just as vibrant. You will absolutely fall in love with Pavilhão Chinês, where you can start the evening with cocktails. If instead, you’re more of a beer-lover, make sure to make a quick stop at Duque Brewpub, where you can find a fantastic selection of different Portuguese brews.
For more of a bar and club life, definitely hop in and out of each one in Bairro Alto, where all sorts of bars are present along the narrow streets. Instead, for a more fun and alternative experience, pass by Pink Street, pictured all over TikTok. From love houses to library bars, to drag queens, it is right out of a movie. But of course, you cannot miss live music at Clube de Fado where the typical music of the country is played all night long, for a wonderful typical experience.
Lisbon offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re a history buff, foodie, or party enthusiast, Lisbon is a city that will captivate you at every turn. Don’t forget to stop by O Trevo for a true taste of Lisbon’s local charm!
