We’ve all been told that life is a beautiful journey to go through. It’s true that it can be beautiful despite there being plenty of dark times, but no matter how much they can really suck in the moment, they teach us important values and lessons that will help us make life better for ourselves in the future. Most of us IE students are ranging from the ages of 17 to 23, so we haven’t fully grown or rather entirely come to experience all life has to offer. However, many of us have already learnt and gone through so much in our time on this Earth. For the people out there who maybe feel like they could use some advice, below you can find ten lessons I learned in the span of twenty years that truly everyone should hear at least once:

Lesson #1: Your thoughts are everything. They will shape and define both who you are and how you live your life

Your thoughts may be the most powerful thing you have and it is up to you alone what type of life you want to live. If you want to live an abundant life, think positive. You create your own reality everyday, so whatever you think, you eventually become, create, and attract.

Lesson #2: Learn to manage your time accordingly because time is the one thing you will never get back

Time should be treated with the same importance we give money. Spend it wisely! Go enrol in that finance class, go out with your friends, do whatever you wish to do with your time and make it count.

Lesson #3: Surround yourself with good friends and commit to being one

Get rid of friends who don’t support you and get rid of people in your life who bring you down. Surround yourself with people who think like you and preferably have the same ambitions you have.

Lesson #4: Be a good person and show kindness

There are not a lot of kind people in the world so when you show kindness to someone else, they are going to remember you and that moment for a long time. It costs nothing to be kind and it can make a huge difference to another person.

Lesson #5: Forgiveness benefits two people – the giver and receiver

The smartest people take a bad situation and choose to learn, forgive, and move on from it. Don’t allow holding a grudge or grievance on someone to dictate your life. You don’t need the extra weight on your path to success.

Lesson #6: Commit to building better habits

They say it takes 21 days to build or break a habit. If you truly commit to creating a better habit for yourself for just these 21 days, you will soon find out how easy it is to keep it as part of your daily routine. Just remember to be consistent every single day!

Lesson #7: Invest your time in having some financial education

Everyone should have at least some type of financial knowledge. Understanding how money works will definitely help you out in the future and there are also tons of platforms you can use to learn. Whether it’s watching a Youtube video, taking an extra class, or using IE’s resources, it’s definitely something worth spending your time on.

Lesson #8: Have a good idea about who you are and what your values are

Knowing who you are is the basis of life. When you know who you are, making decisions comes easier to you, you can see and reach better opportunities for you, and you have a clearer path on what you want to do with your life. Take time to listen and get to know yourself and you may just surprise yourself with everything you are capable of accomplishing.

Lesson #9: Be grateful

The more grateful you are for what you already have, the better you will feel about yourself. Be grateful everyday and practice turning your thoughts into positive, appreciative ones. Instead of obsessing over what you don’t have, feel incredibly grateful over what you do have. You will find your greatest gifts, strength, and power in what is already yours, so appreciate the good things and the good times.

Lesson #10: The choice to be bitter or better is your own

Lesson #10: The choice to be bitter or better is your own

If you have a problem, go solve it. If you make the choice to stay bitter about life, you will end up missing all the great things it has to offer. Bad times do not equal a bad life, you have a choice on your attitude towards your circumstances. It is up to you and no one else but yourself to get the results you want.
